The Detroit Lions had a strong 2025 NFL Draft, landing names like Tyleik Williams and Tate Ratledge to bolster their roster. But it’s an undrafted free agent who’s making headlines this week — thanks to none other than baseball legend Derek Jeter.
Anthony Tyus III, a running back from Ohio University and Kalamazoo native, received a public shoutout from Jeter on social media. Jeter congratulated Tyus, a former member of the Jeter’s Leaders program, on his NFL opportunity.
“Big congrats to Kalamazoo @JetersLeaders alum Anthony Tyus III, who’s heading to the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent!” Jeter wrote on Facebook. He praised Tyus for his resilience, leadership, and academic success, noting his Academic All-Big Ten recognition during his college career at Northwestern and Ohio.
Tyus, who transferred to Ohio for the 2024 season, turned heads with 1,215 rushing yards, nine touchdowns, and 16 catches for 137 yards and two scores. Now standing at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, he joins a competitive Lions backfield featuring Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
While Tyus faces an uphill battle for playing time, his determination and production have caught the eye of one of Michigan’s most famous athletes — and the Lions’ coaching staff will surely be watching him closely this preseason.
