Lions Lock in Derrick Barnes with Three-Year, $25.5M Extension
The Detroit Lions are keeping their linebacker corps intact, signing Derrick Barnes to a three-year, $25.5 million contract extension, with $16 million guaranteed. Despite suffering a knee injury in Week 3 of the 2024 season, Barnes has proven to be a key piece in Detroit’s defense since being drafted in 2021.
Initially a special teams contributor, Barnes worked his way into a starting role and became a vital SAM linebacker under linebackers coach-turned-defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. He joins Alex Anzalone and Jack Campbell as Detroit’s top linebackers heading into 2025.
With free agency kicking off next week, the Lions are making sure they retain their core as they gear up for another deep playoff push.
