It finally happened—after plenty of speculation, the Los Angeles Chargers officially cut ties with Joey Bosa. The move wasn’t shocking, considering his injury history, declining production, and the cap space the team freed up by letting him go.
Now, the big question: Where does Bosa land next? A reunion with his brother Nick in San Francisco seems like a natural fit, but any team desperate for a pass rusher could be in the mix—including, of course, the Detroit Lions.
Detroit does need help on the edge, especially since Za’Darius Smith hasn’t actually played alongside Aidan Hutchinson yet. But is Bosa the right move?
Lions Named as a Top Landing Spot—But Should They Be?
CBS Sports’ John Breech listed the Lions as one of seven possible destinations for Bosa, mainly because their pass rush is basically “Hutchinson or bust.”
Here’s the issue: While Bosa made the Pro Bowl last season, it wasn’t exactly based on elite production—he had just five sacks. He did play 14 games (more than the previous two seasons combined), but durability remains a major concern. And at almost 30, those issues aren’t going away.
Could the Lions sign him cheap? Maybe. But even then, how much does he really have left in the tank? Having Hutchinson across from him should make his job easier, but he had Khalil Mack in L.A. and still struggled.
Detroit needs a veteran pass rusher, but they’re not desperate enough to take a gamble on what’s left of Joey Bosa’s career. Time to look elsewhere.
