ESPN Mock Draft Predicts Lions Will Add Tennessee Edge Rusher James Pearce Jr.
The Detroit Lions are expected to target a pass rusher in the 2025 NFL Draft, and ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. sees them addressing that need with Tennessee’s James Pearce Jr. in his latest mock draft.
Kiper has the Lions selecting Pearce with the 28th overall pick, emphasizing his potential as a strong complement to Aidan Hutchinson. “To get past their playoff hump, having a steadier presence rushing the passer on the other side of Hutchinson is key,” Kiper wrote. Despite logging just 7.5 sacks in 2024, Pearce posted an impressive 19% pressure rate—second-best in the FBS—showcasing his explosive burst and power off the edge.
At 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds, Pearce recorded 19.5 sacks and 75 tackles over three seasons with the Volunteers. His name has been linked to Detroit before, with Pro Football Focus also mocking him to the Lions after the NFL Combine.
With the recent release of veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith, Detroit’s need for additional firepower on the defensive line has only increased. Adding a disruptive pass rusher like Pearce could help solidify a defense looking to take the next step in 2025.
