With OTAs in full swing and training camp just weeks away, the NFL offseason is moving fast—and that means opportunity is knocking for savvy front offices. The Detroit Lions could be in position to make one more sneaky-good move before July by picking up a proven veteran lineman who’s still on the market.
One name to keep an eye on: Will Hernandez.
Hernandez, a 29-year-old former second-round pick, has started 91 of the 97 games he’s played since entering the league in 2018. Most recently with the Arizona Cardinals, he brings a ton of experience and physicality to the interior offensive line—something Detroit could use more of, especially after losing right guard Kevin Zeitler to the Titans in free agency.
Now, the Lions have some young talent ready to step up—Christian Mahogany, Tate Ratledge, and Miles Frazier among them—but it wouldn’t hurt to add a reliable veteran to that mix. Especially one like Hernandez, who’s played both guard spots and could offer versatility and leadership.
Yes, injuries have been an issue. Hernandez only played five games last season after suffering a season-ending knee injury. But before that, he was quietly putting together a strong campaign. He posted a solid 74.2 pass-blocking grade and a career-best 66.0 in run blocking on PFF.
Considering where we are in the offseason, the Lions might be able to land him on a bargain deal—and that’s the kind of smart, low-risk move that could pay off big if the injury bug hits again.
It’s not flashy, but if the Lions want to keep their offensive line elite—and protect Jared Goff while paving lanes for David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs—Hernandez could be the perfect June insurance policy.
