Detroit Drafts Tyleik Williams, Experts Question Value but Praise Fit

The first round of the NFL Draft is in the books, and the Detroit Lions made their move—selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams. While the Lions clearly liked what they saw in the big man up front, national analysts had mixed feelings about the pick.

Let’s break it down.

CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco wasn’t overly impressed, giving the pick a C+, noting that while Williams can collapse the pocket, he would’ve preferred an edge rusher here.

NFL.com’s Chad Reuter was a bit more optimistic with a B+, pointing to Williams’ athleticism for a 330-pounder and his nonstop motor as traits that could make him a solid piece in Detroit’s front.

USA Today also went with a C+, highlighting that while Williams is a bruiser who can stuff the run, he may never be a major threat as a pass rusher.

Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski landed in the middle with a B, saying Williams fits the Lions’ “type” and should bolster their run defense immediately.

Sports Illustrated echoed a similar sentiment with a C+, citing his dominance against the run but emphasizing the need for growth as a pass rusher.

Yahoo Sports’ Charles McDonald graded it a B, calling Williams a strong plug in the middle who can help right away while Alim McNeill rehabs from injury.

So, what’s the verdict? Tyleik Williams might not be the flashiest pick, but he’s got the traits to carve out a role early in Detroit’s rotation. Whether he develops into more than a run-stopper remains to be seen—but for now, the Lions have added another big body to the trenches.
