Detroit Evaluating Edge Rusher with 4.5 Career Sacks in Draft Process

The Detroit Lions continue to focus on bolstering their defense ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, using one of their Top 30 visits on Texas A&M edge rusher Shemar Stewart. While Stewart is an intriguing prospect with elite athletic traits, his college production raises questions about his readiness to contribute immediately at the NFL level.

Over three seasons at Texas A&M, Stewart recorded just 4.5 sacks—1.5 in each season—which is far from the dominant numbers typically expected from a first-round pass rusher. However, his physical tools are undeniable. At the NFL Combine, Stewart turned heads with a 40-yard dash time that ranked fourth among edge rushers, a 40-inch vertical jump (second-best at his position), and an eye-popping 10’11” broad jump, the best of any edge rusher in the class. These numbers showcase his raw explosiveness and hint at significant upside if developed properly.

The Lions have already hosted multiple defensive prospects in the pre-draft process, including linebackers Chaz Chambliss (Georgia) and Ruben Hyppolite (Maryland). Their focus on the defensive front is clear, as they look to address areas that struggled in key moments last season. While Detroit boasts an elite edge rusher in Aidan Hutchinson, the team still needs a consistent threat on the opposite side. Marcus Davenport was brought in this offseason, but injuries have limited his effectiveness in recent years, making depth at the position a priority.

Given Stewart’s unpolished pass-rushing skills, drafting him would likely be a long-term investment rather than an immediate solution. If the Lions select him, they may need to add a veteran edge rusher in free agency to ensure they have reliable production in 2025. While Stewart’s athletic potential is undeniable, Detroit must weigh whether they can afford to spend a high draft pick on a developmental player when they have pressing defensive needs.
