The Detroit Lions are wasting no time gearing up for the 2025 season, kicking off rookie minicamp this weekend (May 9–11) at the Meijer Performance Center. While the focus is on checking out their new draft picks and undrafted signings, the Lions are also taking a close look at several free agents — including some familiar names from around the NFC North.
Three tryout players in camp — defensive lineman Trevis Gipson, cornerback Duke Shelley, and wide receiver Malik Taylor — all previously suited up for Detroit’s division rivals. Gipson, who played for the Chicago Bears from 2020 to 2022, racked up 75 tackles and 11 sacks before brief stints with the Titans and Seahawks. Shelley, also a former Bear (2019–2021), brought versatility with 53 tackles and solid special teams work. Taylor, meanwhile, was a Green Bay Packer in 2020–2021, contributing seven catches, 80 yards, and a touchdown across 25 games.
All three players have NFL roster experience and are hungry for another shot — especially on a contender like the Lions. This minicamp could be their chance to impress Dan Campbell’s staff and fight for a spot heading into summer. Keep an eye on these names as Detroit continues shaping its roster for what fans hope will be another deep playoff run.
