The Detroit Lions are getting some extra reps this preseason, scheduling joint practices with two AFC teams ahead of their home exhibition games.
Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed Friday that the Lions will host the Miami Dolphins for two days of joint practices leading up to their August 16 preseason matchup at Ford Field. A week later, Detroit will hold a single joint practice with the Houston Texans before facing them on August 23.
This summer, the Lions are one of the few NFL teams playing four preseason games. They’ll kick things off with the Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers, then head to Atlanta to take on the Falcons before returning home for the Dolphins and Texans matchups.
The joint practices are a good opportunity for the Lions to sharpen their play against quality opponents in a controlled environment. For Miami, it’s part of a busy preseason as well, with additional joint sessions scheduled against the Bears and Jaguars.
With Detroit looking to build on a 15-2 season and shake off last year’s postseason disappointment, these competitive practices should help set the tone early.
