Detroit Keeps Its Linebacker Core Intact—Barnes Gets New Deal

Lions Secure Derrick Barnes with Three-Year Extension Despite Injury Concerns

The Detroit Lions are keeping linebacker Derrick Barnes in the fold, agreeing to a three-year, $25.5 million contract extension that includes $16 million fully guaranteed, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Barnes, who has played a key role in Detroit’s defense since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, is coming off a torn PCL and MCL in his right knee, raising questions about his availability for the start of the 2025 season. Despite the injury, the Lions prioritized bringing him back, reinforcing their commitment to continuity on defense.

Over four seasons, Barnes has racked up 205 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits, and four sacks. His most memorable moment came in the 2024 NFC Divisional Round, when he intercepted Baker Mayfield, sealing a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and sending the Lions to the NFC Championship Game.

With Brad Holmes leading the charge, Detroit continues to lock in key pieces ahead of free agency. Barnes’ extension ensures stability in the linebacker corps as the Lions push for another deep playoff run in 2025.
