The Detroit Lions have their sights set on strengthening key areas as they prepare for the 2025 NFL Draft. With seven total picks, including the 28th overall selection, general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell are looking to build on last season’s impressive 15-2 record.
Holmes has emphasized the need for a stronger pass rush, citing the difficulty the Lions faced in acquiring defensive talent last year. Injuries forced the offense to carry the team late in the season, and Detroit is determined to prevent that from happening again. With that in mind, here are three top targets the Lions could consider in the first round.
Donovan Ezeiruaku, EDGE, Boston College
If Detroit wants to improve its pass rush, Ezeiruaku could be the perfect fit alongside Aidan Hutchinson. The All-American defensive end dominated at Boston College, racking up 80 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 16.5 sacks en route to winning ACC Defensive Player of the Year. His ability to disrupt the backfield would give the Lions the defensive boost they need.
Grey Zabel, G, North Dakota State
Keeping Jared Goff upright and paving the way for the ground game is always a priority, and Zabel’s skill set could help. He’s one of the top pass protectors in the draft and excels in the run game as well. His addition would bolster an already strong offensive line and help maintain the balance that made the Lions’ offense so dangerous in 2024.
Xavier Watts, S, Notre Dame
The Lions’ secondary struggled late in the season, and their playoff loss to the Washington Commanders exposed the need for reinforcements. Watts brings versatility and explosiveness to the defensive backfield, with experience in multiple schemes and positions. His presence would help the Lions defend against top quarterbacks in the NFC and add much-needed depth.
With the draft approaching on April 24, Detroit has options to shore up its roster. Whether they prioritize a pass rusher, offensive line help, or secondary support, the Lions are in a prime position to make an impact selection in the first round.
