Malcolm Rodriguez’s return from ACL surgery gives Detroit’s defense a timely lift as the team gears up for the second half of the season.
As the Detroit Lions return from their bye week and shift focus toward a grueling stretch of their 2025 campaign, head coach Dan Campbell’s defense is set to welcome back one of its most respected voices in the locker room.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, sources have confirmed that the Lions are activating linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez from injured reserve, clearing the way for him to rejoin practice this week. The move marks a major milestone in the Oklahoma State product’s recovery after suffering a torn ACL last December against the Chicago Bears.
Rodriguez’s Long Road Back
Affectionately known as “Rodrigo” inside the Lions’ building, Rodriguez hasn’t played since that Week 13 matchup in 2024. His return had been hinted at earlier this month when Campbell expressed optimism about his progress.
“We’re hoping after the bye we can start rolling him out there a little bit, get him going,” Campbell said on Oct. 14.
The linebacker’s rehab included a minor cleanup procedure during the offseason to remove scar tissue, as first reported by Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network. Despite the setback, Rodriguez remained a visible and vocal presence at the team’s Allen Park facility, often encouraging teammates through practices and team meetings.
Before the injury, Rodriguez had quietly established himself as one of Detroit’s most efficient tacklers. In just 10 games last season, he logged 43 tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss, a pass defended, and a forced fumble — production that underscored his ability to impact multiple phases of the game.
Perfect Timing for Detroit’s Linebacker Unit
Rodriguez’s return couldn’t have come at a better time. The Lions recently placed veteran Zach Cunningham on injured reserve with a lingering hamstring injury, sidelining one of their most dependable special teams contributors for at least four weeks. His earliest possible return would be on Thanksgiving Day against the Green Bay Packers in Week 13.
With Cunningham out, Detroit’s linebacker depth was beginning to thin. The return of Rodriguez gives defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn more flexibility to rotate fresh bodies — a luxury the team will need as they push toward the postseason.
Lions Taking a Patient Approach
The Lions have shown caution with players returning from major knee injuries. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who tore his ACL late last season, wasn’t rushed back even after his practice window opened earlier this fall. Detroit waited until Week 7 to activate him, allowing for a full recovery and conditioning ramp-up.
It wouldn’t be surprising if the Lions use a similar timeline for Rodriguez. Even though he’s cleared to practice, the team will likely prioritize long-term durability over immediate impact, especially given how valuable he is in their defensive rotation.
Looking Ahead
Drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft (188th overall), Rodriguez has consistently defied expectations — transforming from a late-round pick into a dependable starter and fan favorite. His energy, football IQ, and leadership have made him a cornerstone of Detroit’s evolving defense.
As the Lions chase their postseason ambitions, having “Rodrigo” back on the field symbolizes more than just another body returning from injury — it’s a reminder of the team’s resilience and commitment to finishing strong.
