Shaun Dion Hamilton has been promoted to linebacker coach for the Detroit Lions, stepping up from his role as the team’s assistant linebackers coach. The announcement was made Saturday evening, solidifying his place within the coaching ranks of an organization on the rise.
Hamilton, who played college football at Alabama from 2014 to 2017, was a key contributor to two national championship teams in 2015 and 2017. Over his four years with the Crimson Tide, he recorded 104 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions, making his mark as a standout linebacker.
His NFL journey began in 2018 when the Washington Commanders selected him in the sixth round of the draft. Hamilton spent three seasons in Washington before joining the Lions for his final season as a player. In 2022, he transitioned into coaching, starting as a defensive assistant for the Lions.
Now, after the Lions’ historic 2023 season, Hamilton takes on a larger role with the team. His promotion reflects his growth within the organization and offers an opportunity to further his coaching career with a team poised for continued success. The Lions’ faith in Hamilton signals confidence in his ability to develop their linebackers and contribute to the team’s future.
