The Detroit Lions have been active this offseason, making several roster moves as they prepare for another run at the top of the NFC. But even after free agency additions and contract restructures, one major roster concern still stands out.
General manager Brad Holmes has strengthened several areas of the team, yet the Lions still appear to have a significant need at edge rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson.
Detroit’s defense has improved in recent seasons, but the lack of a consistent second pass rusher has continued to show up in key moments.
Why the Edge Position Matters So Much
Hutchinson has developed into one of the NFL’s most disruptive defenders, consistently generating pressure and forcing offenses to adjust their game plans.
The problem is that opposing offensive lines can often focus their protection schemes on Hutchinson, knowing there isn’t another elite pass rusher consistently threatening from the other side.
Adding a high-level edge defender would:
Reduce double teams on Hutchinson
Improve the Lions’ overall pass rush
Help the secondary by forcing quicker throws from quarterbacks
That’s why many analysts believe this position remains the final piece needed to elevate Detroit’s defense into elite territory.
The Names Still Being Linked to Detroit
Several potential options have been mentioned as the Lions look for help on the edge.
Among the most discussed names are:
Trey Hendrickson
Maxx Crosby
Both players would represent major upgrades, though acquiring them would likely require significant financial commitment or trade compensation.
Detroit has already created additional salary cap flexibility by restructuring the contract of quarterback Jared Goff, giving the team at least some room to explore major defensive additions.
The Draft Could Also Provide an Answer
Even if the Lions don’t land a veteran pass rusher, the team could still address the need in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Holmes has built much of Detroit’s core through smart drafting, including stars like Hutchinson, Penei Sewell, and Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Adding a young edge rusher with high upside could be another long-term solution.
🏈 The Bottom Line
The Lions have made strong progress building a championship-caliber roster under head coach Dan Campbell.
But until Detroit finds a true second elite pass rusher to complement Hutchinson, the defense may still be missing a key ingredient needed to dominate opposing offenses.
Whether through free agency, a trade, or the draft, this is one roster hole the Lions will almost certainly try to address before the 2026 season kicks off.
