Lions to Interview Darren Sproles for Coaching Role
The Detroit Lions are in the process of filling out their coaching staff after losing seven assistant coaches this offseason. As part of their search, the team is reportedly set to interview former NFL running back Darren Sproles for a position on their coaching staff.
Sproles, who had an illustrious 15-season career with the San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Philadelphia Eagles, is transitioning into coaching after serving as a personnel consultant for the Eagles since 2020. A three-time Pro Bowler, Sproles set the NFL record for single-season all-purpose yards (2,696) in 2011. His experience as one of the most versatile and dynamic all-purpose backs in the league could bring valuable insight to the Lions’ offense, particularly to running backs like Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery.
Though Sproles and head coach Dan Campbell didn’t overlap in New Orleans, the potential addition to the coaching staff could be a major boost for the Lions’ backfield. The role Sproles would take on is still unclear, but his wealth of knowledge could be especially beneficial for emerging players like 2024 draft pick Sione Vaki.
It remains to be seen if Sproles has interviewed with other teams, but his reputation and experience make him a compelling candidate for the Lions.
