Detroit Lions Could Bolster Roster with OL, DE Free Agents Before Training Camp

The Detroit Lions enter training camp with one of the NFL’s deepest rosters, but some holes remain that could benefit from proven veteran help.

Lions Wire recently highlighted several free agents who could make an impact in Detroit, including standout names like offensive lineman Brandon Scherff and defensive end Za’Darius Smith—both fitting key areas of need.

With Frank Ragnow retiring and Graham Glasgow potentially shifting to center, adding a steady veteran like Scherff could help ease pressure on young guards Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge. Though Scherff isn’t the All-Pro he once was, he’s remained a reliable presence during recent seasons in Jacksonville.

“While he’s no longer the perennial Pro Bowler he was in Washington, the 33-year-old Scherff still played strong all-around ball,” noted Jeff Risdon. “He’d be a natural plug-and-play option at right guard.”

On the defensive side, the Lions could also target Matt Judon. Despite a quiet year in Atlanta, the Detroit native was one of the NFL’s most disruptive pass-rushers prior to injury, tallying 15.5 sacks for New England in 2022 and leading the league in sacks early in 2023 before a torn biceps ended his season.

Other intriguing options include tight end Gerald Everett and cornerback Mike Hilton, both of whom would bolster Detroit’s depth and veteran leadership.
