The Detroit Lions have decided to stay put in their current training facility in Allen Park, Michigan. A few years ago, the team was exploring options for a new home, but after renovating their current space, they’ve decided it’s not worth moving.
According to team president and CEO Rod Wood, the current facility has everything they need. “We’re convenient to downtown, the airport, and highways,” Wood said. “People have even decided where to live based on where the facility is, so moving would be super disruptive.”
One downside to staying is that there’s no room for a third outdoor field, and they can’t expand much to accommodate more fans during training camp. But Wood thinks the recent upgrades to the training and weight room, plus a new partnership with Meijer and more revenue from Ford Field naming rights, make up for it.
In fact, Wood says the facility feels brand new, despite being built in 2002. This year, they’re even upgrading the players’ locker room, which was overdue for a renovation. The current locker room got a C+ rating from players in a recent NFLPA report card.
Wood says the upgraded facility will have a brand-new locker room, an expanded weight room, and all-new weight equipment. The team will start using the facility later this month, with organized team activities scheduled for late April.
