Detroit Lions Land Free Agent Who Prioritized Fit Over Money

New Lions LB Grant Stuard Picked Detroit Over Bigger Paychecks
It looks like Dan Campbell’s culture in Detroit is becoming a real draw for players—enough to make them turn down bigger guarantees elsewhere. That’s exactly what new Lions linebacker Grant Stuard did when he signed with the team this offseason.

According to The Detroit News’ Nolan Bianchi, Stuard had offers with more financial security, but he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be part of the Lions’ program. He was blown away when he played against Detroit last season, saying, “If there’s a whole building of people like that, I would love to be there.”

Stuard has spent the past three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, mostly as a standout on special teams. But last year, he stepped up defensively, racking up 40 tackles and two tackles for loss—his best season yet. He’ll now step into a role previously held by Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who turned his special teams contributions into Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. If Stuard follows that path, he might find himself with even better offers next year—but for now, he’s all in on helping Detroit chase a Super Bowl.
