Report: NFL Executive Expects Lions to Have Interest in $80 Million Former All-Pro
As the Detroit Lions continue to rise as a top contender in the NFC, their cap space and strong 2024 performance have made them a potential landing spot for several big names this offseason. One such name is former All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who could become available after the Los Angeles Rams reportedly told him they plan to trade him this offseason.
During a February 4 appearance on *Sportscaster*, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shared insights from a league executive who suggested the Lions might pursue Kupp, due to his strong connection with quarterback Jared Goff. The two came into the league together, made Pro Bowls together, and their chemistry could be a key factor in the Lions’ interest.
However, while the connection with Goff is clear, some analysts are questioning the fit. Detroit already boasts two 1,000-yard receivers—Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams—along with Sam LaPorta, who has shown promise at tight end. With a run-heavy offensive system and the presence of talented backs like David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, adding Kupp might not make the most sense.
Kupp had a solid 2024 season, with 67 receptions for 710 yards, but his $80 million contract could complicate the Lions’ financial flexibility. It’s a move that might not be a priority given the team’s existing offensive depth, and some believe there are better fits available for both Kupp and the Lions.
Verdict: While the idea of pairing Kupp with Goff is intriguing, it feels like the Lions’ roster already has the pieces to succeed without him. Unless a trade offer is extremely favorable, it seems unlikely that Detroit would prioritize this move.
