Detroit Lions Lose Key Staff Member as Assistant Follows Ben Johnson to Chicago

Wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El accepts a promotion with the Bears

A Major Shakeup in Detroit’s Coaching Staff

The Detroit Lions’ coaching staff is undergoing significant changes this offseason. While the team managed to retain some key personnel, they are losing wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El to the Chicago Bears. Randle El will join former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who recently became the Bears’ head coach. According to reports, Randle El will serve as Chicago’s assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, marking a well-deserved promotion for the former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver.

Randle El has been a part of Dan Campbell’s coaching staff since 2021, and his contributions have been instrumental in shaping Detroit’s offense over the past few seasons.

Randle El’s Impact on the Lions’ Wide Receivers

Randle El’s tenure in Detroit has been nothing short of impressive. He played a pivotal role in developing Amon-Ra St. Brown, who has become a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler under his guidance. Additionally, Jameson Williams achieved his first 1,000-yard season this year, showcasing the immense potential that made him a first-round pick despite facing off-field challenges.

Randle El’s ability to unlock the potential of his players made him a sought-after coach. Over the past few years, he has interviewed for multiple offensive coordinator roles around the league. His move to Chicago reflects his growing reputation and the Lions’ success in grooming coaching talent.

Filling the Void in Detroit

With Randle El’s departure, the Lions are left with significant gaps to fill on their coaching staff. The team is now searching for replacements for their offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and wide receivers coach.

The Lions have already begun addressing the vacancies. Kacy Rodgers, formerly the defensive line coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has been brought in to replace Terrell Williams. Meanwhile, Larry Foote, another former Buccaneers coach and Michigan standout, is a candidate for the defensive coordinator position.

Internally, there are several names to watch for the offensive coordinator role. Running backs coach Scottie Montgomery, quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell, and passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand are strong candidates. Engstrand, in particular, has garnered attention due to his close working relationship with quarterback Jared Goff and his trajectory mirroring that of Ben Johnson during his time in Detroit.

Dan Campbell’s Vision for Continuity

Head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear that continuity and alignment with the Lions’ identity will be paramount in hiring new staff members. Speaking about the coaching vacancies, Campbell emphasized the importance of staying true to the team’s established culture.

“I want what I believe is going to be as close to what we have been as possible, and we don’t lose what we’re about and our identity,” Campbell stated. “No matter what happens, I want to do what’s right by our team. I want someone who can command respect and get everybody going in the same direction.”

What’s Next for the Lions?

The Lions’ coaching turnover is a testament to the team’s success in developing both players and staff. However, losing key figures like Randle El and Ben Johnson presents challenges as the team looks to build on its momentum from recent seasons.

As Detroit continues to retool its coaching staff, all eyes will be on how they navigate these transitions and maintain their identity as a rising force in the NFC. With Campbell’s leadership and a strong core of internal candidates, the Lions are poised to make strategic moves to sustain their progress heading into 2025.
