Detroit Lions Lose Key Veteran as Linebacker Returns to Injured Reserve

Zach Cunningham’s setback deals a blow to Detroit’s linebacker depth heading into the bye week

Another Tough Break for a Resilient Veteran

The Detroit Lions’ injury woes continued on Wednesday as the team announced that veteran linebacker Zach Cunningham has been placed on injured reserve. Cunningham, who made his long-awaited return in Monday’s 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, saw his comeback cut short after suffering another hamstring injury — an aggravation of the same issue that sidelined him earlier in the season.

Cunningham had been listed as questionable to return during the game, but Wednesday’s roster move confirms that the injury will keep him out for an extended period. For a player who fought his way back to the field after weeks of rehab, the timing couldn’t be more frustrating.

From League Leader to Injury-Plagued Journeyman

A former second-round pick out of Vanderbilt, Cunningham entered his ninth NFL season with hopes of reviving his career in Detroit. Once one of the most productive tacklers in football — leading the NFL with 164 combined tackles in 2020 — the veteran linebacker has since battled injuries that derailed what was once a promising trajectory.

Over the years, Cunningham has suited up for Houston, Tennessee, Philadelphia, and Denver before signing with Detroit this offseason. While his role with the Lions has primarily been on special teams, he still brought valuable leadership and depth to a young linebacker unit. Through four games, Cunningham logged 65 special teams snaps, 14 defensive snaps, and seven total tackles.

Lions Linebacker Unit Holds Steady Amid Setbacks

While losing Cunningham stings, the Lions have managed to maintain stability at linebacker this season. Alex Anzalone and Jack Campbell continue to anchor the middle of Detroit’s defense, while Derrick Barnes has taken notable strides in his third year.

There is, however, a glimmer of good news — Malcolm Rodriguez could return soon from the torn ACL that sidelined him earlier this year. His recovery appears to be on track, and his return after the bye week could help soften the blow of Cunningham’s absence.

Still, Cunningham’s latest setback is a reminder of how fragile roster depth can be in the grind of an NFL season. As Detroit eyes a playoff push, the hope is that this injury doesn’t become a trend for a veteran who has fought hard just to stay on the field.
