Detroit Lions Predicted to Cut Rookie RB Anthony Tyus III Despite 1,200-Yard Breakout

The Detroit Lions added promising size and power when they signed undrafted rookie running back Anthony Tyus III, but his time in Detroit could be short-lived. After a breakout senior year at Ohio, Tyus is fighting for a roster spot in a crowded backfield — and he might not make the cut.

According to SI.com’s John Maakaron, Tyus is projected to fall outside the Lions’ final 53-man roster. Starters Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are locked in, with Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki providing depth. That leaves Tyus on the outside looking in, though he could land on the practice squad.

Tyus turned heads last season after transferring from Northwestern to Ohio, racking up 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. He finished strong, topping 100 yards in each of Ohio’s final four games, including 151 yards in the MAC title win and 104 yards in the Cure Bowl victory.

But Tyus faces stiff competition from Vaki, who switched from safety to running back and earned praise from Lions running backs coach Tashard Choice. Vaki’s versatility and impact on special teams give him an edge in the battle for a roster spot.

Choice is excited about Vaki’s development heading into his second year, saying he’s impressed with Vaki’s quickness and work ethic.

“He works extremely hard,” Choice said, via SI.com. “He has D-Mo and Jahmyr as examples, so he’s in a great position to succeed.”

For Tyus, his impressive college finish may not be enough to crack the Lions’ loaded backfield as the team looks ahead to the 2025 season.
