Detroit Lions’ QB Decisions: What Does It Mean for Hendon Hooker?

The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Kyle Allen, and naturally, some fans and media jumped to the conclusion that this spells the end for Hendon Hooker in Detroit. But is that really the case? Probably not.

At this point, we don’t even know the specifics of Allen’s contract. If it’s a low-guarantee deal, he’s likely just competing for the No. 3 spot with Jake Fromm. If there’s significant money involved, then maybe the Lions view him as a more serious option. But one thing remains clear—there’s no hard evidence that Detroit is moving on from Hooker.

Dan Campbell has been upfront about the team’s confidence in Hooker. When the Lions re-signed Teddy Bridgewater last year, he made it clear that decision had nothing to do with Hooker’s development—it was simply about having an experienced backup for a playoff push. That same logic could be in play now.

At the end of the day, Brad Holmes will do what’s best for the team. Could the Lions trade Hooker before the season? Sure, anything is possible. But as of now, he’s still the most likely backup to Jared Goff, while Allen is just another depth piece.
