Detroit Lions Standout Speaks Out on Ben Johnson’s Departure

The Detroit Lions are in for a big shake-up in 2025 after losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the rival Chicago Bears. And tight end Sam LaPorta isn’t hiding how much that stings.

Appearing on  Up & Adams, LaPorta said he’s happy for Johnson, who landed the Bears’ head coaching job, but admitted it’s tough to see him go.

“Of course, happy for Ben. He was a huge reason I ended up with the Lions. Nothing but respect for him. But when Sunday rolls around this fall, friends become enemies, I guess,” LaPorta said.

He added that while it hurts to lose someone he worked so closely with, he’s excited about what’s next for both Johnson and the Lions as they adjust to a new staff.

Johnson was a big part of LaPorta’s journey in Detroit, helping bring him in during the 2023 draft. So, it’s no surprise that LaPorta and the rest of the team have strong feelings about his departure. And with the Bears and Lions facing off twice a year, things are bound to get interesting.

Detroit brought in an outside hire to replace Johnson, meaning LaPorta and the rest of the offense will have to get used to a new system. But given his impressive 1,615 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns over two seasons, LaPorta is sure to remain a key piece of the Lions’ attack.
