Detroit Lions Urged to Target 4-Time Pro Bowler as Ideal Replacement for Injured Christian Mahogany

A key injury leaves Detroit scrambling for answers — and a proven veteran could be the missing piece.

The Detroit Lions’ offensive line has taken another major hit. Just when it seemed like Dan Campbell’s squad was finding balance in the trenches, a devastating injury to starting guard Christian Mahogany has thrown the unit into uncertainty — and sparked serious trade chatter across the league.

A Costly Blow to Detroit’s Offensive Core

Mahogany, who had finally earned a full-time starting role this season after showing promise in limited action as a rookie, suffered a broken leg during the Lions’ 27–24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed the grim update soon after the game.

«“[Mahogany] has a broken bone in his leg and will be out for ‘a long time,’” Campbell told reporters.»

At just 25 years old, Mahogany was viewed as a cornerstone for Detroit’s future on the offensive line. His injury not only weakens the Lions’ interior protection but also threatens to disrupt the offensive rhythm that quarterback Jared Goff relies on, especially against the heavy blitz packages seen in the NFC North.

With the November 4 trade deadline approaching, Detroit’s front office — led by general manager Brad Holmes — may have no choice but to look for outside reinforcements.

Enter Wyatt Teller: A Proven Pro Bowl Solution

One name that has quickly surfaced in trade rumors is Wyatt Teller of the Cleveland Browns. Teller, a four-time Pro Bowler, is widely regarded as one of the league’s top interior linemen and could be exactly what Detroit needs to stabilize its pass protection.

While Cleveland has two elite guards in Teller and Joel Bitonio, both are nearing contract crossroads. Bitonio, 34, is in the twilight of his career, while the 30-year-old Teller could represent a more sustainable investment for Detroit’s offensive future.

According to Pro Football Focus, Teller ranks among the top half of the league’s guards this season and continues to excel in both run- and pass-blocking. In contrast, both Mahogany and rookie Tate Ratledge have shown more strength in the run game but remain below average in pass protection — a critical weakness that Minnesota exploited ruthlessly last Sunday.

Trade Pressure Mounts for Detroit

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell recently noted that the Lions might consider bolstering their offensive line depth before the deadline, particularly after Giovanni Manu struggled filling in for Taylor Decker earlier this season. However, Mahogany’s injury has shifted priorities squarely toward the interior.

Beyond the offensive line, Detroit’s roster has other concerns — from inconsistent pass rush to secondary injuries that have forced constant adjustments. Still, as Barnwell suggested, “finding additional depth along the offensive line” could make the biggest immediate impact.

A Deadline Decision That Could Shape the Season

At 5–3, the Lions remain firmly in the NFC playoff picture. Yet their offensive identity — built on balance, toughness, and control — is at risk if they can’t protect Goff and sustain drives. The addition of a veteran like Teller could be the move that preserves their postseason hopes and gives Detroit a legitimate shot at a deep playoff run.

Whether Holmes decides to make a splash or stand pat, the Lions’ urgency is clear. As Campbell often says, “You can’t flinch.” And with Mahogany sidelined, it might be time for Detroit to take a bold swing — before it’s too late.
