Lions Add Veteran Cornerback Amid Secondary Injury Woes
The Detroit Lions are moving quickly to address a growing issue in their secondary. Following a string of injuries during their matchup against the Cleveland Browns, the team is bringing in extra depth at cornerback.
According to reports from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Tre Flowers — a 2018 fifth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks and most recently on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad — is set to join the Lions’ practice squad.
Head coach Dan Campbell revealed Monday that at least one starting cornerback will be sidelined for Detroit’s Week 5 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.
“He’s going to be down for a while, but the good news is it’s not a season-ender. We will get him back, it looks like,” Campbell said, referring to D.J. Reed, one of the team’s big offseason acquisitions.
Campbell also noted that Reed could potentially be placed on injured reserve, which would sideline him for at least four games. The addition of Flowers doesn’t confirm how long Reed will be out.
The Lions face another concern: Terrion Arnold, the outside cornerback opposite Reed, is also questionable for the upcoming game.
“I don’t think this is a huge thing, but the question is: Is he going to be ready for this week?” Campbell said. “And if it’s not this week, he should be back by next week for sure.”
Flowers brings proven experience and size to Detroit’s roster. Over 95 NFL games (44 starts), he’s lined up primarily as an outside corner, accounting for more than 82% of his defensive snaps. Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 200 pounds, Flowers is known for his run defense, earning PFF run-defense grades of 80 or higher three times in his career. His stats include four interceptions, 22 passes defended, five forced fumbles, two sacks,
and 287 tackles.
