Lions GM Confirms Jameson Williams’ Fifth-Year Option is a No-Brainer
Detroit Lions GM Brad Holmes made it clear at the NFL Owner’s Meetings Jameson Williams’ fifth-year option is basically a done deal. With the deadline coming up on May 1, Holmes told reporters that the team is “most likely” picking it up.
“He was a tremendous player for us last year. He’s still scratching the surface,” Holmes said. “It just makes sense for us to do what we can to keep him around.”
After a breakout 2024 season where Williams topped 1,000 receiving yards and finished second in the league in yards per catch (17.3), the decision seems easy. His option for 2026 will cost the Lions $15.493 million, but his play has made that price tag more than reasonable.
That being said, Williams’ journey hasn’t been all smooth sailing. A two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy and an incident involving an unregistered gun (though he wasn’t charged) raised some concerns. But on the field, he’s proven his worth.
Holmes also mentioned that while the team is focused on picking up the option, a long-term extension isn’t off the table. However, with wide receiver contracts soaring in value, the Lions will be strategic about future deals.
For now, expect the team to lock in Williams for at least one more year and keep an eye on whether they commit to him for the long haul.
