Detroit Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone isn’t hiding his frustration as training camp kicks into full gear — and it has nothing to do with what’s happening on the field. Entering the final year of his contract, Anzalone voiced disappointment over the team’s lack of urgency in starting extension talks, especially after serving as a four-time defensive captain since joining the Lions in 2021.
Despite being a leader and consistent contributor, Anzalone is set to earn $6 million this season — far less than what similar linebackers around the NFL have recently signed for. “It’s kind of obvious,” he said when asked why he feels underpaid. “Production, play, the market.”
The 30-year-old linebacker isn’t just upset about the money — he’s disappointed the issue hasn’t been addressed at all, which is out of character for GM Brad Holmes, who’s usually proactive with key players. The Lions already gave an extension to Derrick Barnes this offseason, making Anzalone’s situation more glaring.
Adding to the drama, Anzalone’s social media activity over the summer hinted at growing tension — something critics say may have drawn unwanted attention. Still, many inside and outside the locker room believe he’s earned a raise and an extension.
With padded practices around the corner and expectations sky-high in Detroit, this contract cloud could become a lingering issue unless the front office steps up soon.
