Detroit’s Late Surge Can’t Overcome Early Deficit Against New York

The Tigers made it a nail-biter, but their ninth-inning surge came up just short in a 4-3 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon. After being shut out through eight innings, Detroit finally found some fire—scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth and nearly stealing the series finale at Comerica Park.

Jack Flaherty was electric early, striking out nine over 5.1 shutout innings, but the bullpen faltered late. Tyler Holton gave up a two-run blast in the seventh that proved costly. Detroit’s bats, quiet most of the day, woke up just in time to give fans hope—only for the rally to stall with the tying run stranded.

The loss snaps a five-game win streak and drops the Tigers to 7-5. They’ll now turn their attention to a weekend series in Minnesota, looking to keep the momentum going despite Wednesday’s heartbreaker.
