Detroit’s New Star Making His Presence Felt Early

The Detroit Lions didn’t waste time in the offseason, aggressively addressing key needs through both the draft and free agency. But one newcomer in particular has quickly emerged as a standout during early workouts and team activities—rookie wide receiver Treyson Carter, Detroit’s first-round pick out of Ohio State.

And according to coaches, veterans, and even fans in attendance at minicamp, he’s already turning heads.

“He just gets it,” head coach Dan Campbell said during a press conference after Day 3 of OTAs. “Treyson’s energy, his route discipline, and his understanding of the playbook this early—it’s impressive. He’s not acting like a rookie.”

Carter was drafted 18th overall in April and entered a crowded but talented wide receiver room alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Josh Reynolds. But with his elite speed, crisp route running, and football IQ, Carter has already carved out a spot in the first-team reps.

During open practices, Carter showcased instant chemistry with quarterback Jared Goff. On one play, he burned a cornerback on a deep post for a 45-yard gain. On another, he hauled in a toe-tap catch on the sideline that drew loud cheers from the sideline.

“He’s explosive,” Goff said. “You can feel his presence. He’s fast, he’s smart, and he listens. That’s all you can ask for.”

Veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson also gave Carter high praise, calling him “a problem in space” and “someone who’s going to make defenses respect every inch of the field.”

Beyond the physical skills, it’s Carter’s work ethic that’s winning people over.

“He’s the first in the film room and the last off the field,” said wide receivers coach Antwaan Randle El. “We knew he had the tools, but the way he prepares is what makes him special.”

Fans are already buzzing about the potential of a high-powered Lions offense that features Goff, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, St. Brown, and now Carter. If early glimpses are any indication, Detroit may have landed another offensive cornerstone.

Though it’s still early in the summer, the buzz around Treyson Carter is real. If he continues to progress at this pace, Lions fans can expect fireworks this fall—and possibly, a deep playoff run.
