Detroit’s Next Defensive Weapon? Kory Woods’ Mock Draft 2.0 Predicts Edge Help

With the 2025 NFL Draft inching closer, mock drafts are starting to take shape, and the Detroit Lions’ potential plans are coming into focus. In MLive’s latest mock draft, analyst Kory Woods projects the Lions to select Ohio State edge rusher J.T. Tuimoloau with the 28th overall pick, adding another force to an already dangerous defensive front.

At 6-foot-5 and 269 pounds, Tuimoloau is a versatile defender who made a name for himself at Ohio State with his ability to set the edge against the run while providing a disruptive presence as a pass rusher. He finished last season with 61 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and three passes defended, showcasing his all-around impact. His combination of size, strength, quickness, and football IQ makes him an intriguing fit for Detroit’s evolving defense under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.

One of Tuimoloau’s biggest strengths is his ability to hold the edge, preventing running backs from bouncing outside, a skill that would be valuable in Detroit’s aggressive defensive scheme. While he has room to refine his pass-rushing moves, pairing him with Lions defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers could help him unlock his full potential. His ability to occasionally drop into zone coverage also adds a layer of versatility that fits the Lions’ style of play.

There’s still uncertainty surrounding the Lions’ exact defensive scheme under Sheppard, but Tuimoloau has the traits to thrive in a traditional 4-3 system, making for a seamless transition. More importantly, his mindset and approach to the game align with the Lions’ culture. His interviews at the NFL Combine reportedly reinforced that he’s a player who simply loves football and wants to contribute however he can—exactly the type of mentality Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes look for.

Of course, there’s still speculation that Detroit could be a major player in the Myles Garrett sweepstakes, which would dramatically impact the defensive outlook. But regardless of what happens in free agency, adding a high-upside edge rusher like Tuimoloau would give the Lions another young, dynamic piece to build around.
