“Detroit’s Next QB? Goff Might Have Company Soon!”

Lions Might Be Goff-ing in a New Direction—And a Rising Star Could Be Waiting in the Wings

Jared Goff’s days in Detroit might be numbered—and it’s not just because of performance. It’s all about the money.

Right now, Goff’s contract is manageable, but in 2026? His cap hit skyrockets to nearly $70 million. That’s over 22% of the team’s salary cap—ouch. Historically, only legends like Mahomes, Brady, and Manning have managed to win Super Bowls while eating up that much cash, so yeah… odds aren’t in Goff’s favor.

That financial bomb looming on the horizon has people wondering if the Lions are ready to move on—and a name is already floating around: Sam Leavitt.

Analysts think Detroit could snatch up the Arizona State QB in the second round of the 2026 Draft. Leavitt is making serious noise. After transferring from Michigan State, he lit it up at ASU—throwing nearly 3,000 yards, scoring 24 touchdowns through the air, and running in five more himself. He even took the Sun Devils to the College Football Playoff.

Scouts love him. He’s been dubbed the best QB prospect in the Big 12 and just picked up the preseason Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award.

The Lions may already be hedging their bets. Remember, they took Hendon Hooker in the third round last year. That’s not a “just in case” pick—it’s a “we’re thinking ahead” move.

So what’s next? Goff still has the starting job, but unless he blows everyone away this season without offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Detroit could be looking to the future… and Leavitt might be exactly what they’re looking for.
