The Detroit Lions took a major hit when star center Frank Ragnow unexpectedly retired in early June, leaving a massive void in one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines. Combined with the departure of starting left guard Kevin Zeitler in free agency, the interior of Detroit’s line has turned from a clear strength into a significant question mark just weeks before training camp.
Christian Mahogany flashed potential in limited snaps last season and is the early favorite to replace Zeitler, while rookies Tate Ratledge and Miles Frazier were drafted to bolster depth. But Ratledge, a physical presence from Georgia, may be thrust into a starting role at center sooner than planned, especially if Graham Glasgow is shifted around to fill holes.
Given the uncertainty, the Lions would be wise to sign veteran guard Brandon Scherff, who remains available in free agency. Scherff, a five-time Pro Bowler and former top-five pick, has started every game the past three seasons and brings invaluable experience and toughness. Although he’s no longer an elite force, he’s a reliable presence who could stabilize the line and give Detroit flexibility with its younger players.
Adding Scherff would allow the Lions to let Glasgow and Ratledge battle it out at center without rushing either into a critical role. Most importantly, it would keep Detroit’s offensive front intact as they aim to contend in a competitive NFC North.
This move wouldn’t be about the long-term—it’s about keeping a Super Bowl-caliber team on track right now. Bringing in a proven veteran like Scherff could be the key to ensuring the Lions’ offense doesn’t skip a beat.
