Detroit’s WNBA Comeback? Pistons’ Gores Leads Expansion Bid

Detroit Pistons Owner Tom Gores Leads Bid to Bring WNBA Back to Detroit

Detroit could soon see the return of a WNBA franchise, as a high-profile investment group has officially submitted a bid for an expansion team. Led by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores, the group includes Lions principal owner Sheila Hamp, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, and several other influential figures in business and sports.

Gores emphasized that Detroit is the perfect market for a WNBA comeback, citing the city’s passionate fan base and strong basketball culture. The original Detroit Shock won three championships (2003, 2006, and 2008) before relocating to Tulsa in 2009, leaving a void in the city’s basketball scene.

“This is an exciting opportunity to bring additional investment and economic activity to Detroit,” Gores said, highlighting the bid as a way to unite the community and continue growing the WNBA’s presence in the Midwest.

With the league actively looking to expand, Detroit’s chances of landing a team seem promising. If successful, the new franchise could spark fresh excitement in the city’s sports landscape and restore its place in women’s professional basketball.
