Manny Ramirez will always be remembered as a Boston Red Sox legend—an eight-time All-Star, two-time World Series champ, and one of the biggest reasons the Sox finally ended their 86-year title drought in 2004. But Red Sox Nation might not be too happy with his latest comments.
In a recent interview with The Bronx Zoo, Ramirez admitted that he was actually a Yankees fan growing up and even dreamed of playing for them.
“I’m always a Yankee fan,” Ramirez said in the video, which was posted on Twitter. “I went to school in New York. That was one of my dreams, to play with the Yankees. It didn’t happen, but I got two World Series.”
Ouch. If that wasn’t painful enough for Sox fans, he went on to say that Yankees fans are the best.
Ramirez, who was born in the Dominican Republic but moved to Manhattan at 13, was heavily pursued by the Yankees in free agency before he signed with Boston in 2001. Of course, he went on to become a nightmare for New York, hitting .322 with 55 home runs against them over his eight seasons in Boston.
This isn’t the first time a Red Sox icon has admitted to being a secret Yankees fan. Pedro Martinez also grew up rooting for the Yankees and even asked to be traded to New York three times in his career.
At the end of the day, Ramirez never got his Yankee pinstripes, but he did spend years dominating them in a Red Sox uniform. Maybe that’s an even bigger sting for New York than his confession is for Boston.
