Detroit Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes had some doubts about his future with the team, especially after suffering a serious knee injury that knocked him out for the entire 2024 season. But despite tearing his MCL and PCL in Week 3, the Lions made it clear he was still a key part of their defense.
Barnes, a fourth-round pick in 2021, has steadily developed over the years. Before his injury, he was making an impact, earning solid defensive grades and proving himself as a versatile player. According to linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard, Barnes was playing five different positions in-game—a testament to his adaptability.
Detroit showed their faith in him with a three-year, $25.5 million extension, including $16 million guaranteed. Some analysts believe the Lions slightly overpaid, considering Barnes doesn’t have the same production as others in his contract range. However, with the rising salary cap, the team can afford it.
Barnes shines in run defense and has improved in a hybrid off-ball role. As he enters his fifth season, the Lions are banking on his continued growth.
Final Grade: B-
A bit pricey, but Detroit values his versatility and potential. If he fully bounces back, this deal could look much better in hindsight.
