The Detroit Lions are predicted to lose two key players to a division rival. The team lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to a head coaching job at the Chicago Bears this offseason.
Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press suggests that Johnson’s Bears could look to boost both sides of the line by signing Lions defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike and lineman Dan Skipper.
Onwuzurike stayed fully healthy for the Lions and moved between defensive tackle and defensive end. He is one of the top interior defensive linemen available on the open market and is projected to receive $8 million per year on a new deal.
Skipper was often used as an extra lineman on running plays and even as a target in the red zone. The Bears need depth on the offensive line, and Skipper could be an option.
The Lions have taken a careful approach to roster building, which has left few roster holes headed into free agency. However, the team does need to address the defensive line, with Onwuzurike expected to be the biggest departure.
The Lions lost defensive linemen Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo to season-ending injuries, which could impact their preparations. The team could take aim at veteran linemen available in free agency, such as Calais Campbell or Sebastian Joseph-Day.
The Lions could also use a high draft pick to address the position. They need to add at least one starting-caliber interior defender in free agency or the draft.
