Dolphins Sign Former Jets Corner Kendall Sheffield After Rookie Minicamp Tryout

The Miami Dolphins have added a familiar NFL name to their secondary, signing veteran cornerback Kendall Sheffield following a solid showing at rookie minicamp. Sheffield, a former fourth-round pick out of Ohio State in 2019, previously spent time with the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons. Known for his elite speed—he still holds OSU’s 60-meter dash record—Sheffield is hoping to stick around in Miami, even if his role may be limited.

While Sheffield brings experience, he faces an uphill battle to secure a roster spot. Dolphins analyst Dante Collinelli believes Sheffield is more likely to compete for a special teams role than a starting position, especially with fellow veteran Artie Burns in the mix. Despite starting 20 games early in his career, Sheffield has seen minimal action in recent seasons, logging just 92 defensive snaps with the Jets in 2024.

The Dolphins are in desperate need of depth at cornerback, especially with Kendall Fuller released and Jalen Ramsey reportedly on the trade block. Still, insiders don’t see Sheffield as a long-term solution. The team is expected to continue exploring more experienced options like Rasul Douglas, who excelled last year in Buffalo and could fit well in Miami’s Cover 2 scheme.

For now, Sheffield joins a crowded group hoping to earn a spot in training camp. With the roster at the 90-man limit—pending adjustments like Terron Armstead’s retirement and international exemption Bayron Matos—every addition counts.
