The President continues his streak of high-profile sports appearances while paying tribute to America’s military heroes.
A Presidential Visit for a Patriotic Cause
President Donald Trump will be in attendance for Sunday’s matchup between the Washington Commanders and the Detroit Lions, marking his first NFL appearance of the season and continuing his recent trend of showing up at major sporting events.
The Commanders confirmed Trump’s attendance ahead of the Week 10 clash at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, where the NFL will spotlight its annual “Salute to Service” initiative—an event recognizing active-duty service members, veterans, and their families.
“We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country,” Commanders President Mark Clouse said in a statement. “The entire Commanders organization is proud to participate in the NFL’s league-wide Salute to Service initiative, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, and their families this Sunday.”
With the game taking place just a short distance from the White House, Trump won’t need to board Air Force One for this appearance—making for one of the more convenient outings on his packed public schedule.
What Is the NFL’s ‘Salute to Service’?
The Salute to Service campaign has become one of the league’s most meaningful traditions. Since its inception, the NFL has raised over $75 million for military-focused charities, including the Pat Tillman Foundation, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), and the Wounded Warrior Project.
Each year, the league also presents a Salute to Service Award to a player, coach, or staff member who exemplifies exceptional dedication to the military community. The 2024 recipient was San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, who was honored for his consistent support of veterans and service families.
Sunday’s game will feature special on-field tributes, custom uniforms with military-inspired accents, and pregame ceremonies celebrating service members in attendance—a fitting stage for the president’s visit.
Reports Surface: Trump Interested in Stadium Naming Rights
While Trump’s appearance centers on honoring veterans, reports surfaced over the weekend hinting at another layer of intrigue. According to ESPN, sources claim the president has privately expressed interest in having Washington’s planned new stadium—set to open in 2030—named after him.
The new facility, approved by Washington D.C. earlier this year, will bring the team back closer to the city after years in Maryland. It’s proposed to occupy the historic RFK Stadium site, just two miles from the U.S. Capitol.
Though the Commanders retain naming rights for the venue, such a decision would ultimately fall to the District of Columbia Council, which typically favors corporate sponsorships over individual naming.
Trump’s Growing List of Sports Appearances
Trump’s trip to the Commanders-Lions game continues a familiar trend. Since his first election in 2016, he has been a regular figure at high-profile sporting events, both as president and private citizen.
His attendance list includes:
- Game 5 of the 2019 World Series
- The Daytona 500
- Super Bowl LIX
- LIV Golf tournaments
- The 2024 U.S. Open Final
- The 2024 Ryder Cup
- Several UFC main events
- Georgia vs. Alabama (Sept. 2024)
- New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers on 9/11/25
Now in his second term, Trump continues to intertwine politics, patriotism, and sports in ways few presidents have before—this time using the NFL’s Salute to Service stage to spotlight America’s military heroes and, once again, put himself at the center of a nationally televised moment.
