Former President to Attend NFL’s ‘Salute to Service’ Game in Washington Amid Veterans Day Weekend
The Washington Commanders’ Week 10 home game against the Detroit Lions is set to have a high-profile guest in attendance. Former President Donald Trump will attend Sunday’s matchup as part of the NFL’s annual “Salute to Service” weekend, which honors military veterans, active-duty service members, and their families.
Honoring Service, Spotlighting Sacrifice
The Commanders confirmed Trump’s attendance on Friday, saying his visit aligns with the weekend’s patriotic theme, which coincides with Veterans Day on Tuesday. The organization expressed pride in taking part in the league-wide initiative.
“We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country,” said Commanders President Mark Clouse in a statement. “The entire Commanders organization is proud to participate in the NFL’s league-wide Salute to Service initiative, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, and their families this Sunday.”
While the event will celebrate America’s military community, Pentagon officials have confirmed that service members will not be participating in any official capacity. Due to the ongoing government shutdown, members of the Department of Defense are prohibited from taking part in public outreach activities, limiting their involvement in this year’s ceremonies.
A Familiar Face in Football Circles
Trump’s connection to football is well-documented. Decades before his political career, he was the owner of the New Jersey Generals in the 1980s United States Football League (USFL), a short-lived but ambitious challenger to the NFL. He also explored purchasing the Buffalo Bills in 2014 following the death of longtime owner Ralph Wilson, though the team was eventually sold to Terry and Kim Pegula.
Sunday’s game between the Commanders and Lions is shaping up to be more than just a clash of playoff hopefuls—it’s a celebration of service, patriotism, and the people who defend the nation. With Trump’s attendance confirmed, the event will likely draw additional national attention, blending football and civic tribute under the same spotlight.
