Just because the Detroit Lions are loaded with fantasy weapons doesn’t mean their offense is easy to predict — and one analyst is warning fantasy managers not to assume they’ve got the pecking order figured out.
Last season, Jared Goff held it down as a top-10 fantasy QB. Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery both cracked the top 20 at running back. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams brought the juice at wideout. And Sam LaPorta? He broke into that top-tier tight end club early.
But this year, with John Morton stepping in as offensive coordinator — and vowing not to shake things up too much — there’s still room for subtle shifts. According to ESPN’s Eric Karabell, one of those shifts could be LaPorta overtaking Jameson Williams in fantasy value.
Yeah, you read that right.
Karabell dropped a bold prediction: “Lions TE Sam LaPorta outscores WR Jameson Williams.” Why? While Williams is a big-play threat who averaged over 17 yards per catch, his production came in waves. Nearly half his targets were concentrated in just five games. LaPorta, meanwhile, battled through early injuries but finished strong, grabbing six or more targets every game from Week 10 on.
Don’t let the boom-or-bust flash fool you — LaPorta’s steady red zone role and consistency could make him the better fantasy bet this season. So if you’re already locking in your Lions fantasy picks, you might want to take a second look before penciling Williams in above the tight end.
