While names like D.J. Reed and Jack Campbell are already generating buzz, the Lions have a couple of quieter threats flying just below the radar — but not for long.
Two staffers over at DetroitLions.com pointed to the same name when asked which under-the-radar player fans should keep an eye on: linebacker Derrick Barnes. And with good reason.
Barnes was off to a solid start last year before a knee injury in Week 3 sidelined him for the season. But when healthy, he’s the kind of versatile linebacker Dan Campbell loves — one who can rush the passer and hold his own in space. If the Lions’ D-line stays healthy and disruptive, don’t be surprised if Barnes racks up some big-time stats in 2025.
Then there’s cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr., a second-year player who missed most of his rookie season due to injury. But during OTAs this spring, with Terrion Arnold sitting out, Rakestraw got some valuable first-team reps — and reportedly made the most of them.
If both Barnes and Rakestraw can carry this momentum into training camp, the Lions’ defense could be deeper — and more dangerous — than anyone’s expecting.
