Double Threat: Georgia Defender Offers Pass Rush and Versatility for Detroit

Derrick Barnes’ impending free agency presents a crucial decision for the Detroit Lions. Barnes excelled in his do-it-all linebacker role before suffering a season-ending knee injury. His return would make sense, given his growth under defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard and the team’s need for a reliable SAM linebacker.

Georgia’s Jalon Walker could be an attractive alternative if Barnes departs. Walker played various positions last season, including defensive line, edge, and slot cornerback. His versatility and athleticism make him an intriguing prospect.

Walker’s role at the next level is debated, with some viewing him as a pass rusher and others as a linebacker. He seems capable of handling both responsibilities.

“I’m a ball player, so just being on the field is my favorite position,” Walker said. “Just being everywhere, you just don’t know, that anticipation of being at the outside backer one snap, and then being an inside backer one snap, then being at the star for one snap.”

Walker’s draft stock varies, with Pro Football Focus ranking him 27th among prospects and NFL Network placing him ninth overall. The Athletic has him third among all prospects.

Walker broke out with 60 tackles, including 11 for loss and 6.5 sacks, adding two pass deflections and two fumble recoveries last season. His ability to learn and adapt, paired with his natural pass-rush skills, make him a compelling defensive player in the draft.

Walker often draws comparisons to former Georgia linebacker Nolan Smith, who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Smith was the 30th pick in the draft two years ago, with similar questions about his position and fit.

“I do (like that comparison), just for the person and player he is,” Walker said. “He’s a relentless player, and I feel like we’re wired from the same place.”
