Early Free Agency Moves Reveal Winners and Losers on the Lions Roster

The Detroit Lions wasted no time making moves once the NFL’s legal tampering period began, and the first 24 hours of free agency have already reshaped parts of the roster.
Detroit focused heavily on rebuilding the offensive line after several key departures. The team added center Cade Mays and offensive tackle Larry Borom, while also bringing in running back Isiah Pacheco to strengthen the backfield.
However, free agency is never just about additions. The Lions also lost several important contributors, and those changes are already creating clear winners and losers across the roster.
🏆 Winners
DT Tyleik Williams
One of the biggest beneficiaries of the early free agency developments could be defensive tackle Tyleik Williams.
Detroit allowed defensive tackle Roy Lopez to leave in free agency after he signed with the Arizona Cardinals. With Lopez gone and veteran defensive tackle D. J. Reader still uncertain to return, Williams may be in line for a much larger role.
The former first-round pick saw his playing time increase throughout last season and could now become a key piece next to defensive tackle Alim McNeill on Detroit’s defensive line.
QB Jared Goff
At first glance, the Lions’ offense appeared to take a hit after losing players like David Montgomery, Graham Glasgow and Taylor Decker.
But Detroit’s quick response in free agency suggests the organization is still committed to protecting quarterback Jared Goff.
Adding Cade Mays provides the team with a long-term option at center, while Borom offers versatility at tackle. The Lions also strengthened their interior depth with additional offensive line help, reinforcing the protection around their franchise quarterback.
RG Tate Ratledge
The signing of Mays also has a positive ripple effect for right guard Tate Ratledge.
Before the move, Ratledge had been considered a potential option at center following the retirement of Frank Ragnow. During training camp, Ratledge even took reps at center despite never playing the position in college.
Now that Detroit has secured a starting center in Mays, Ratledge can remain at right guard — the position where he played well during his rookie season and where the Lions believe he can continue developing.
📉 Losers
OT Giovanni Manu
The addition of Larry Borom could make things more difficult for offensive tackle Giovanni Manu.
Manu is entering a critical third season, but his path to a starting job may now be more complicated. With star tackle Penei Sewell locked in on one side and Borom competing for playing time, Manu will likely face serious competition during training camp.
Injuries limited his development last season, and he’ll now need a strong offseason to stay in the Lions’ plans.
DC Kelvin Sheppard
Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard may have the toughest challenge following the first wave of free agency.
Detroit lost several key defensive contributors, including linebacker Alex Anzalone, cornerback Amik Robertson and defensive tackle Roy Lopez.
Anzalone had been one of the emotional leaders of the defense, while Robertson offered versatility in the secondary. Losing those players creates multiple holes that Sheppard and the coaching staff must now address.
Unless Detroit adds reinforcements soon, the defense could remain a major offseason priority.
RB Sione Vaki
Running back Sione Vaki also saw his path to playing time become more difficult.
The Lions signed Isiah Pacheco — formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs — to provide a physical complement to star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Pacheco’s arrival likely pushes Vaki further down the depth chart. After spending most of last season contributing on special teams, Vaki will now need to impress in camp if he wants a larger offensive role.
🏈 The Big Picture
The first 24 hours of free agency have brought major changes for the Detroit Lions.
While the team moved quickly to rebuild its offensive line and add depth on offense, the defense has taken some significant losses that still need to be addressed.
With plenty of free agency still remaining — and the NFL Draft ahead — general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell still have time to reshape the roster.
But one thing is already clear: the Lions’ offseason is off to a dramatic start, and the ripple effects from these early moves could shape Detroit’s 2026 season in a big way.
