The Detroit Lions’ biggest offseason move was signing cornerback D.J. Reed, and according to ESPN’s Field Yates, it’s already paying dividends. While the team lost both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, raising doubts about their ability to sustain success, Yates believes the Lions are equipped to weather the changes.
Yates acknowledged that Detroit’s offense might experience early struggles without Johnson but insisted the team deserves the “benefit of the doubt” thanks to the strong foundation built by general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell.
As for Reed, Yates views him as a significant upgrade over Carlton Davis, who left for the New England Patriots after just one season in Detroit. Though Reed doesn’t boast eye-popping interception numbers, he brings physicality and a playing style that fits perfectly with the Lions’ defense.
“A transition that many would see as a challenge, I think the Lions are embracing with a ton of internal confidence,” Yates said. “The defense is not only healthier but more talented this year. The addition of D.J. Reed at cornerback, replacing Carlton Davis, will help the defense look more like it did at the start of last season.”
Yates also noted that several key Lions defenders who missed time last season—like Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill—are back healthy, which should further elevate the unit’s performance.
Meanwhile, the Lions are hopeful new coordinators John Morton (offense) and Kelvin Sheppard (defense) can keep the team’s momentum going after two straight playoff runs.
