Lions Trade Rumor: Could Kayvon Thibodeaux Be a Fit in Detroit?
The Detroit Lions have largely committed to keeping their roster intact this offseason, banking on better health in 2025 after last year’s brutal injury luck. But one glaring need remains—edge rusher. While the upcoming draft offers plenty of options, adding a veteran should still be on the table.
A blockbuster move for a top pass rusher was never in the cards, and even the faint trade whispers around Trey Hendrickson have quieted. But one intriguing name has surfaced: New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Pro Football Focus recently floated the idea of Detroit making a move for Thibodeaux, who was taken three picks after Aidan Hutchinson in the 2022 draft. While he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in New York, he did flash his potential with 11.5 sacks in 2023. However, injuries have been a factor, as he missed five games last season and three as a rookie.
The Giants face a key decision on Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option by May 1, as well as whether they’re willing to commit to him long-term. If they have any doubts, now would be the time to maximize his trade value. But the big question is: Would they actually entertain offers?
Detroit certainly did its homework on Thibodeaux before the 2022 draft and has gotten extended looks at him in joint practices over the last two preseasons. But pulling off a trade wouldn’t be easy. The Giants would likely demand at least a Day 2 pick, and there’s little indication they’re eager to move him.
While the concept of pairing Thibodeaux with Hutchinson is intriguing, the reality of making it happen seems unlikely. The Lions have upcoming contract extensions to handle, and New York doesn’t appear motivated to part ways with its young pass rusher.
Trade Grade: C+ – Fun to think about, but not realistic.
