Martellus Bennett’s time with the Dallas Cowboys didn’t exactly go as planned. Drafted in the second round in 2008 from Texas A&M, he was supposed to take over from Jason Witten, but things didn’t work out that way. Instead, he bounced around the league, playing for six different teams over his 10-year career.
But he did manage to cap it all off with a Super Bowl ring. On February 5, 2017, Bennett was part of the New England Patriots team that pulled off one of the most legendary comebacks in NFL history, overcoming a 28-3 halftime deficit to beat the Falcons 34-28 in overtime. He played his part, too, catching five passes for 62 yards.
Now, that Super Bowl ring? It’s no longer in his possession. Bennett recently auctioned it off for $88,125. Some fans were surprised he let it go, while others thought he could’ve gotten even more, especially since the ring is tied to Tom Brady—the quarterback who just kept stacking up championships.
Bennett made history in another way too, reportedly becoming the first player from that Patriots dynasty to sell his ring. While he had his moments in the NFL, including a Pro Bowl season with the Chicago Bears, it seems the sentimental value of the ring just wasn’t enough to keep it off the auction block. Cold, hard cash won out.
