Jamaal Williams Hits Free Agency After Saints Move On
Jamaal Williams is back on the market. The New Orleans Saints have decided to cut ties with the veteran running back, making him a free agent just one year after he left Detroit.
Williams, who turned 29, was let go as part of the Saints’ effort to clean up their messy salary cap situation. The team needs to shed at least $40 million before the new league year kicks off next week, and moving on from Williams saves them about $1.59 million.
After leading the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns in 2022, Williams expected a bigger offer from the Lions. When that didn’t happen, he signed a three-year, $12 million deal with New Orleans, but things didn’t pan out. In 2023, he managed just 164 rushing yards and one touchdown while sharing backfield duties.
Lions fans still remember Williams for his infectious personality, anime references, and emotional speeches on Hard Knocks. Now, the big question is—what’s next for him?
