Ex-Lions Kicker Off Target Again as Rookie Outshines Him at OTAs

John Parker Romo’s shot at sticking in New England is slipping fast. The former Detroit Lions kicker is locked in a training camp battle with rookie Andres Borregales, and right now, it’s not looking great for Romo.

During the Patriots’ recent OTA sessions, Romo connected on just 2-of-4 field goal attempts. Borregales? A perfect 4-for-4. And this isn’t just a one-time thing. Romo had similar issues last month, missing two more kicks in nearly identical fashion—one wide right, the other wide left.

It’s a troubling trend, especially with mandatory minicamp around the corner. If Romo doesn’t turn things around quickly, he could be out before training camp even begins.

Romo’s journey in the NFL has already been a bit of a rollercoaster. After a stint in the XFL with the San Antonio Brahmas, he signed with the Lions last May but didn’t make the final 53-man roster. Since then, he’s bounced between the Bears’ practice squad and a short run with the Vikings, where he actually performed well—hitting 11-of-12 field goals and 7-of-8 extra points.

The talent is clearly there. But unless Romo finds his groove in a hurry, this latest opportunity with the Patriots could be over just as fast as it started.
