Ex-Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson Wins Assistant Coach of the Year

Though Ben Johnson is no longer with the Detroit Lions, his legacy remains strong after being named the Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year at the 2025 NFL Honors. Under his leadership, the Lions’ offense reached new heights in 2024, breaking numerous franchise and league records.

The Lions led the NFL in points scored and finished second in total offense. Quarterback Jared Goff had a career year, throwing 37 touchdown passes, while running back Jahmyr Gibbs excelled with 20 touchdowns, leading the league. Johnson’s ability to balance explosive passing and a dominant rushing attack was a key factor in the team’s success.

Following the Lions’ playoff exit, Johnson left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Despite the rivalry, Goff praised Johnson’s influence on his career, expressing admiration for his former coach.

Johnson’s rise within the Lions organization, starting as a quality control coach, culminated in his promotion to offensive coordinator in 2022. His work transformed the Lions into one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses, making him a highly sought-after head coach.
